2013 Silver Beaver Recipients

       Cloyd A. Rupert

A humble and quiet man Cloyd Rupert – known better as “Sonny,” he is willing to help in any way he can - whether it is within Scouting, his church or the community and in doing so, makes them feel welcomed and appreciated.

Sonny began as an adult volunteer in Scouting at Mill Creek Pack 204 with his grandson serving as Cubmaster, then he joined Troop 25 Chartered to Huntingdon First United Methodist Church’s Committee in 1993 before taking on the role of Committee Chairman in1999.  In 2005, Cloyd became Chartered Organization Representative for Pack 226 – First Church of the Nazarene. 

A Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow, Sonny is active in OA work weekends and volunteers for projects during summer camp.  He attends most Pack/Troop meetings and activities to help mentor and provide leadership to the Scouts and adults.  His commitment to the expansion of the Scouting program earned him the first William D. Boyce Unit Organizer Award.  He has also been recognized with the God and Service Award from the Nazarene Church.

An active member of the Church of the Nazarene in McConnelstown, he has served as a Trustee, on the Finance and property committees and has traveled to Arizona to preform missionary work.  

Mr. Rupert is retired from Owens Corning where we worked in the Maintenance and Welding Departments.

Sonny and his wife Bonnie have one daughter and reside in Huntingdon.

For outstanding service to the community and youth, the Juniata Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America is proud to present the Silver Beaver Award to Cloyd “Sonny” Rupert.

 

Joseph P. Strigle

A thoughtful, analytical approach to working with youth and adults, bringing a common ground to development, implementation and successful programs for his Troop, the Order of the Arrow and council level programs describes this dedicated volunteer.

Joe Strigle has served in several volunteer capacities in the Juniata Valley Council including Committee Member, Committee Chairman for Troop 83 Chartered by the Knights of Columbus in State College for thirteen years and Lodge Advisor for Monaken Lodge-Order of the Arrow since 2008.  During his tenure as Advisor the Lodge has hosted a successful Section Conclave and designed the Aquanuschioni Pow Wow to also serve as a new Scout recruiting program.

A Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow, Mr. Strigle joined the Council Executive Board serving as Vice President of Membership, Nominating Chair, and this evening became the Council President.

Joe is an active member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in State College where he serves as a Lector.  He has been involved in the Bald Eagle Power Squadron serving on the executive committee, including as Commander, taught safe boating classes, and has advanced to the level of Junior Navigation.  

Mr. Strigle is a Senior Director with SRI in State College.  He was one of 5 associates who convinced SRI leadership to open the State College operation in 1993.

Joe and his wife Kay are the parents of two children – Brad (an Eagle Scout) and Jessica and they reside in State College.
